Singapore Integrated Shield Plans — Expats Guide

For Singaporeans returning from overseas, new Permanent Residents, and PR-track buyers. We do not publish star rankings or fabricated review counts — verify solvency on the MAS Financial Institutions Directory and read the insurer's published policy wording.

Foreign nationals on Employment Pass, S Pass, or Dependant's Pass are not enrolled in MediShield Life and therefore cannot purchase IP plans. If that is you, look at Private Medical Insurance (PMI) instead — we do not cover PMI on this site.

What expat-track buyers should weigh

MediShield Life eligibility is the gate

IPs sit on top of MediShield Life, which only covers Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. Foreign nationals on EP / S Pass / Dependant's Pass are not enrolled and cannot purchase IP plans — they need Private Medical Insurance (PMI) instead.

Pre-existing conditions on re-entry

Returning Singaporeans who let an IP lapse face re-underwriting on the new policy. Conditions developed overseas may be excluded or loaded. Disclose fully on the proposal form — non-disclosure voids cover at claim time.

Panel hospital network

Each IP plan operates a panel network of private hospitals and specialists. Out-of-panel claims attract higher co-payments. Check that your usual specialists are panel-listed before switching insurer.

Worldwide emergency cover

Some IP plans offer worldwide emergency cover on top tiers. Relevant if you maintain a cross-border lifestyle. Read the territorial limits clause — most exclude planned overseas treatment.

Rider co-payment under MAS guidance

New IP riders sold since 2021 carry a minimum co-payment of 5% per MAS guidance — older as-charged riders kept their structure if continuously held. If you held an older policy that lapsed, re-purchasing means accepting the new co-payment.

CareShield Life is separate

CareShield Life is the long-term disability income scheme that succeeded ElderShield. IP plans do not provide CareShield Life cover. Plan severe-disability cover separately if relevant.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreign nationals on an Employment Pass buy an Integrated Shield Plan?

No. IP plans sit on top of MediShield Life, which is restricted to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. EP / S Pass / Dependant's Pass holders are not enrolled in MediShield Life and therefore cannot purchase an IP plan. They need Private Medical Insurance (PMI) from international medical insurers. This site does not cover PMI products.

I am a Singaporean returning from overseas. Can I reactivate my old IP plan?

If you lapsed the policy, most insurers treat your application as a fresh underwrite. Any condition that developed overseas must be disclosed and may be excluded or loaded. Check directly with your former insurer's policy team before assuming reinstatement is automatic.

Will I lose pre-existing waivers if I switch IP insurer after returning?

Likely yes — most insurers re-underwrite on switch. Any pre-existing waiver granted by your prior insurer does not transfer. If you have an active condition, getting a second underwriting decision before lapsing your existing policy is the safer sequence.

Do IP plans cover treatment in my country of origin if I travel back?

Most IP plans cover emergency treatment overseas only on top tiers; planned overseas treatment is typically excluded unless an evacuation or special-care clause applies. Read the territorial limits carefully if you intend to use cover outside Singapore.

What is the difference between an IP plan and Private Medical Insurance (PMI)?

IP plans wrap MediShield Life and are restricted to Citizens / PRs. PMI is standalone international medical insurance available to anyone, with portable cover across multiple countries. PMI premiums are typically higher than IP premiums for similar private-hospital cover, but PMI does not require MediShield Life enrolment.

How do I check an insurer is supervised by MAS?

Search the insurer's legal entity on the MAS Financial Institutions Directory at eservices.mas.gov.sg/fid. The directory lists current supervisory status, regulatory actions, and registered representatives.
