MediShield Life FAQ
What is MediShield Life and who is covered?
MediShield Life is Singapore's national basic health insurance scheme administered by CPF. It automatically covers all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents for life, regardless of age or health condition. Coverage begins from birth and continues throughout your lifetime, even if you develop pre-existing conditions.
How much does MediShield Life cost?
MediShield Life premiums range from $130/year for newborns to $2,600/year for those 81 and above. Premiums increase with age but are subsidized by the government. For those with lower incomes, additional subsidies of 10-50% may apply. Premiums can be fully paid using your MediSave account.
What does MediShield Life cover?
MediShield Life covers hospitalization in public hospital Class B2/C wards, day surgery, outpatient treatments (chemotherapy, dialysis, immunosuppressants), and some approved outpatient treatments. It has an annual claim limit of $150,000 and covers large hospital bills with deductibles and co-insurance.
What is NOT covered by MediShield Life?
MediShield Life does not cover private hospital stays, Class A/B1 wards in public hospitals, outpatient GP visits, dental care, vision care, preventive health screenings, experimental treatments, cosmetic procedures, or treatments abroad. These gaps are why many Singaporeans upgrade to Integrated Shield Plans.
Should I upgrade from MediShield Life to an Integrated Shield Plan?
Consider upgrading if you prefer private hospitals, want shorter waiting times, desire better ward classes, or want more comprehensive coverage for serious illnesses. ISPs are especially valuable if you have family history of cancer or chronic diseases. However, if you're comfortable with public hospitals and on a tight budget, MediShield Life provides basic protection.
Can I use MediSave to pay MediShield Life premiums?
Yes, MediShield Life premiums can be fully paid using your MediSave account. Premiums are automatically deducted from your MediSave. If your MediSave is insufficient, you'll need to top up with cash. You can also use family members' MediSave accounts to pay premiums.
What happens if I can't afford MediShield Life premiums?
The Singapore government provides premium subsidies for lower to middle income Singaporeans. Additional subsidies through the Medisave 700 scheme, Pioneer Generation subsidies, and Merdeka Generation subsidies are available. In extreme cases, you can apply for MediShield Life premium assistance through community care endowment funds.
What is the difference between MediShield Life deductible and co-insurance?
The deductible ($2,000-$3,500 depending on age) is the amount you must pay first before MediShield Life coverage kicks in. Co-insurance (3%-10%) is the percentage of the remaining bill you must pay after the deductible. For example, on a $10,000 bill with $2,000 deductible and 10% co-insurance, you'd pay $2,000 + $800 = $2,800.
Upgrade Your Healthcare Coverage
While MediShield Life provides basic coverage, consider upgrading to an Integrated Shield Plan for better benefits, private hospital access, and peace of mind
